Thursday HW!

Tonight, please complete the "Analyze the Graph" worksheet provided in class.

**There is a chance we start class tomorrow with an "Analyze the Graph" pop quiz! If we do, it will be the same types of questions you see on this homework--so do it, and check your answers! If you can do the hw, you can ace the quiz!**

A few things to keep in mind (hints) for your assignment:

  • The x-intercepts or solutions or zeroes are where the graph crosses the x-axis! Coordinates: (#, 0)
  • The y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y-axis! Coordinates: (0, #)
  • If a question asks, "when does f(x) = #" we are asked to provide the x-coordinate where the y (or f(x)) value equals the given #!
  • If we are asked to evaluate "f(#)," we need to to provide the y-value for the given x!
  • When we are asked when f(x) < 0, this is asking us to define an interval (using x values) where the y-values are negative!
  • When we are asked when f(x) > 0, this is asking us to define an interval (using x values) where the y-values are positive!
  • A function is one-to-one if it passes the horizontal line test!
Here is a copy of the "Analyze the Graph" worksheet; below is the answer key!

Weekend HW/Quiz Grade for Monday

This weekend, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 24: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 43, 45

If you get stuck, do some online research! Or, read pages 16-18 in your book (for 1,3,5,7,9,11)!

For 43 and 45 you want to solve for x when f(x) = 0; so, replace the "f(x)" with a 0, then solve the equation for x! You got that!

Also, remember you need to have a graphing calculator or graphing calculator app on Monday! (QUIZ GRADE!)

  • If you have a calculator, bring it!
  • If not, go to the app store on your phone and search "graphing calculator"--you'll find one!
    • Download the wabbitemu app if possible!
      • I'd recommend the TI84 Plus model b/c that's what I'll use in class
      • You'll need to download "ROM" or something then download an "OS." Just follow these steps and you'll be good!
    • If you can, download a calculator emulator that looks like the ones we use in class!
    • If all of those fail, you can download the DESMOS calculator!

On Monday in class we'll have some (graded) classwork assignments based on this section; then, for Tues-Thurs we'll move on to section 1.3! Finally, on Friday/Monday we'll cover section 1.4, review for a test the following day, and have a test on Wednesday, 2/3!

Do your homework! When you're done, enjoy your weekend!

See you all on Monday!

Thursday, January 21, 2016

Thursday HW!

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 25: 27, 29, 31, 37

These are all about evaluating functions--that is, substituting for x!

Tomorrow we'll continue with our section 1.2 notes (finish on Monday), and then it's on to the next section! We're going to keep moving quickly!

We will have a test before February break! Yay!

Oh...does anyone want a free copy of NBA 2K15? I just got 2K16 so I don't need it anymore! It's for XBox One. If you want it, email me and I'll raffle it off amongst all the emails I get! carofano.fm@easthartford.org.

Quiz Tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will start class with a quiz on linear functions--STUDY!

Here's what's on the quiz, and where you can look in your notes/slides to study:

  • Given two points, write an equation in all 3 forms.
    • Look at your middle left slide where it gives you two points (3,-1) and (5,6); write the equations in all 3 forms.
    • Here are the answers if you try this:
      • Slope Intercept Form: y = 3.5x - 11.5
      • Point Slope Form: y + 1 = 3.5(x -3) OR y - 6 = 3.5(x - 5)
      • Standard Form: 3.5x - y = 11.5 OR y - 3.5x = -11.5
      • Note: You may use 7/2 instead of 3.5 or -23/2 insead of -11.5
    • Or, look at the last slide--we went over this in yesterday's notes!
  • Determine if two lines are parallel, perpendicular, or neither (given two equations).
    • For each equation, first solve for y to identify the slope
    • Then, compare the slopes to see if the lines are parallel (same slope), perpendicular (slopes are opposite signs and reciprocals), or neither!
  • Graph a line given in point slope form and given slope intercept form
    • Look at a and f from today's stamp problem
  • Write the equation of a line through a point and parallel/perpendicular to a given line.
    • Look at the slide on the bottom right of the first page or the top two slides on the second page.
    • First, solve the given equation for y and identify the slope.
    • Next, determine the slope of the parallel/perpendicular line.
    • Now, use this "new" slope and the given point to write an equation!
  • Write the equation of a line passing through two points (in any form).
    • Look back at the first bullet of this list
Don't forget, you also have your textbook as a resource! Look at the examples in section 1.1 to see more problems--first, try them on your own, and then look at the worked out solution to see how you did!

Tuesday HW = First HW of Q3 = Counts Double!

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 11: 1, 7, 11, 19, 25, 33, 45, 51

I'm checking tomorrow! This assignment counts as double since it's our first homework--start off strong!

Remember, parallel lines have the same slope; perpendicular lines have slopes that are "opposite reciprocals!"

See you all tomorrow! We'll wrap up linear equations, and then it's quiz time on Thursday!

Midterms and Semester 2 and 2 EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES!

Midterm exam scores are in!

On Tuesday this is essentially a new class. No more trig...instead we move on to the "college algebra" portion of PreCalc. The class will become much more Algebra based, and will touch on many things that you've learned in the past. It will also help to prepare you for many of the topics you'll see in a college algebra course next year (or 2 years from now).

"Different" does not mean "easier." We will still tackle some tough stuff, and we will still move quickly.

Our first chapter (starting Tuesday) will review linear equations--we're going to move quickly, and cover EVERYTHING about linear equations in 2 days...so be ready to learn! Look over some old notes and get a head start!

On Tuesday we all have a fresh start. Come to class with a positive attitude, find your new seat, and be ready to learn! This is a nice chance for all of us to start over; take advantage of it! I'd even recommend bringing a new, clean notebook for class!

Start the second semester strong--do the extra credit below! Extra credit #1 will help you get a head start on the math we'll be doing when we're back! We'll have a quiz Thursday!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extra Credit #1: Due Tuesday
On Monday, this will be our stamp problem...it's more of a pre-test, and you can earn up to 3 stamps on this...want to get a head start? Figure out how to do all of these this weekend! If you bring these problems, completed, on Tuesday you will get 4 stamps (3 for the problems, and one bonus stamp) AND you will get 3 points added to your first quiz! (but you have to do them all, and they have to be correct!)

Extra Credit Opportunity #2: Due Tuesday

STUDY!

STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!

Use all of your resources (and those provided below) to get yourself ready for Wednesday's exam! Yes, this exam is going to be tough; you definitely need to prepare yourself (study) if you want to do well! If you show up "cold" and just wing it, you will likely earn a D or F--so get yourself ready! Review your notes, do practice problems, look over old quizzes/tests--refresh your memory on all you've learned!

Also, remember that STAMPS ARE DUE ON THE DAY OF YOUR EXAM (or earlier)!
  • Same deal...count your stamps (double check), and write the total on the front
  • Fasten your stamps together (somehow) with your name and the total on the front!
  • If your total is incorrect, you will get a 0--so count twice!

If you're curious, check this out--Scientifically Proven Tips for Studying!

Here is a list of what's on the exam (by topic and section):

And here are a bunch of different ways you can study!

And lastly, here are the answers to the review packet provided in class so you can check your work! (Also, don't forget, the answers to the sub work are in yesterday's blog post):

STUDY!

It was great to get back and see you all today!

No official homework...just STUDY!

First and foremost, use the answer keys provided in class today (or below) to check your sub work! This is the first way you should begin to prepare for the midterm--if you didn't finish the sub work (review packets), finish! Then, use the keys provided to check your work! If you aren't checking, you aren't using your time productively! (There's no value to practicing if you don't make sure you're practicing correctly)!

Tomorrow in class we will go over questions from the "universal screen," the review multiple choice you worked on with the sub.

Also, remember that STAMPS ARE DUE ON THE DAY OF YOUR EXAM (or earlier)! If I were you, I would count them up and turn them in tomorrow so you don't have to worry about them next week!
  • Same deal...count your stamps (double check), and write the total on the front
  • Fasten your stamps together (somehow) with your name and the total on the front!
  • If your total is incorrect, you will get a 0--so count twice!
Lastly, remember I gave you an outline of midterm exam topics--use it! STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!

See you all tomorrow!
